Dual Sport Tours

Bernie Shaw owner operator of Riders Rest Dual Sport Tours has been riding motorcycles for longer than he cares  to remember. Born in Northern England he reckons on being one of the first schoolboy motocross riders. He remembers in 1968 his father prepared a 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub (4 stroke) in a custom lowered cotton frame. (I wasn’t the biggest guy on the track)

This was in the days before purpose built schoolboy bikes and you raced in-between the adult classes on a shortened course. That was when his love of the sport really started. Thanks mainly to his father Tom and older brother by four years Stephen who rode a 250cc twin port CZ. He recalls his first ride as an adult in 1971 on a 250 Bultaco Pursang then later on a 250 KTM (Penton), 400 single port CZ and last but not least a Maico 250 and 400 from 1979-1982. Making expert rider status and regularly placing in the top three at Northern Regional events.

He moved state side in 1992 to Fort Lauderdale FL working in the private yacht industry where he met his lovely wife Sue (another Brit). After not riding much because of work commitments in England since hanging up the leathers in 1982 he bought a 1992 YZ250 Yamaha that South Florida sugar sand looked like fun and so it was. He recalls winning a hare scramble in the over 40’s class one time but mainly just rode for fun with friends.

On a trip visiting some friends in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia they Bernie and Sue fell in love with the scenery and people there. To cut a long story short they managed to work out a plan to buy a place in Lexington VA and convert into a Bed & Breakfast in November 2002 and opened for business in 2003.

" I had fancied a Honda CRF450R Since four strokes came back into fashion I guess I still had fond memories of the Triumph Tiger Cub from my youth I sold the YZ and became the proud owner of a 2002 CRF450R. I think that is the best bike I have ever ridden. I still have her in my stable today along with his 2002 KTM LC4 640 Enduro and 2003 Suzuki SV 650s.z "

" When taking out my KTM exploring the back woods I came up with the idea of doing Dual Sport Tours. I was having so much fun that I thought why not share my experience with other bike crazy souls. "

Check out our guided tours and accommodations. With Sue running the B&B you will not go hungry and after a day on the trails a hot shower and some bench racing over a few cold ones those comfy beds will be calling.
